This past Thursday, the Pacific Coast Coffee Association hosted their annual Pete McLaughlin cupping competition at The Annex warehouse in Hayword California. The room was packed, with somewhere around 30 people for a presentation and cupping of Kenya coffees submitted by member importers and producers. Overall, the event was well organized and, as always, it was great to see coffee friends and colleagues slurping and spitting together.

Mohammed Molendina presented on Kenya coffee in general and, very interestingly for me, updated us on some of the politics. As a side note, he was actually quite insistent about having time to talk about the politics, which as a political junkie, I really appreciated. In general, Mohammed was a great presenter and I learned a lot about the workings of Kenya coffee industry. I’ll be utilizing my newly gleaned information… as soon as I get around to creating some origin profiles for our incoming Kenya auction lots. Really: it’s going to happen soon.

The cupping itself was fun (as cupping always is); but, I was not overwhelmingly impressed by the coffees. There were some nice lots certainly, but my standard for Kenya is very high and, although, I felt that most of the coffees were solid specialty coffees, I did not find any truly outstanding Kenyas. Part of this impression may have been that these coffees were roasted darker than I am used to for cupping. The roasting was consistent– just a tad dark for my preference.

The winning coffee will be announced at the annual PCCA convention, so, until then, all of the participants wait for the results . . . .

OK. I guess there wasn’t really intrigue (at least that I was involved in… then I’m willing to talk about :-)) at the annual Specialty Coffee Association conference this year; but, I did, however apparently contribute to the most dramatic event of conference, according to the Executive Director of the association.

As some of you know, I have been teaching in conference skill building labs for a number of years. Originally, teaching/assisting in brewing and espresso labs, I now focus mostly in the cupping labs. (I currently serve on the cupping subcommittee for the SCAA Training Committee.) In an out of character moment–and hopefully never to be repeated experience– this year, due to unexpected illness, I had to stop teaching my cupping lab mid class! Fortunately, the class did not suffer in any way as my colleagues teaching in the class with me were able to quite easily take over and surely actually improve the student experience; but, nonetheless, I found the situation embarrassing at best. My thanks to Trish Rothgeb, Lindsey Bolger, and John Gozbekian in particular for jumping in and allowing me to crawl back to my room for some necessary recovery time.

In a better moment, I participated in the judges training for the United States Barista Competition on Thursday, leading the other judges through a French press tasting exercise to hone in on sensory skills. This was a first time program within the USBC judging training, which went decently well overall (if Brent ever reads this, I do have ideas in future). Only one group was largely at odds with the intentions of the tasting and, in their defense, they were the last group tasting after about six plus hours of espresso tasting. I knew the answers, so to speak, and I was fatigued enough myself to start questioning. At the very least, the exercise gave the judges opportunity to taste regular coffee after hours and hours of espresso tasting. I’m sure some were hoping for a switchover to an entirely new line of beverages….

Our own El Salvador coffee presentation was a success on Saturday morning. Luis Rodriguez from the El Salvador Consejo began with an overview of coffee production in El Salvador. Producer partners, Aida Pacas de Castillo from San Joaquin and Santa Sofia (and other Pacas Farms) and Elvy Huezo from El Volcan then shared information about their coffees and operations. Finally, Willem Boot of Boot Coffee Consulting, presented briefly about their consulting work in El Salvador, which includes taking roasters on USAID/fintrac hosted coffee tours. French press brews of our new arrival Matalapa farm El Salvador (first lot sold out) kept us all going. I remain officially in love with El Salvador and their coffees!

One of the most successful events at conference (in the humble opinion of the immediate Past President) was the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) Annual Breakfast. The breakfast format was different this year with more mingling, international Chapter booths, and a great live band. The room was filled to the max with men and women supporting women in coffee. This conference marked the end of my tenure as President. With some regret and some relief (it’s been a big job), I closed the breakfast with a short speech, which probably did not adequately thank everyone for all of their incredible work to support women working in coffee.

I also served as a Cupping Judge in one round of the Coffee of the Year Competition. I actually haven’t seen all of the results yet, but it was a great process and I really, really like cupping with the PortaLab program (AN/TC: Hint. Hint.)

And, of course, parties abound at these conferences. Our joint party with Clover, Intelligentsia, and La Marzocco at the Mill city Museum was a blast. Great food, great music (thanks to our intelligentsia DJ), and fantastic folks. Thanks to everyone who came.

I hope everybody had a good conference experience overall. And, if you did have any of your own drama, I extend full sympathy and, if you had any intrigue, good for you!

If you’re coming to the conference, here are some places where you can catch me. Be sure to say hello and, after long days of coffee tasting, my preference is to mellow out with a Manhattan, so, if I miss you at the following conference activities, you’ll know where to find me…..

We are setting up a new blog on our website for each of us to share activities, favorite coffees, trip reports, and whatnot. Welcome to my blog.

I had the great honor (and I’m really not exaggerating by stating it that way) to judge in the Western Regional Barista Competition in Berkeley California this last weekend. The caliber of barista competitors in this competition was amazing and I had the grand opportunity to observe closely by participating as a sensory judge. I was totally blown away by the final round in particular, where I got to judge 6 outstanding baristas, including our current US champion, Heather Perry of Coffee Klatch, and the new WRBC champion, Chris Baca from Ritual Roasters in San Francisco. I don’t even know what to say about the caliber of their performances and their drinks. Let’s just say that I’ve been close to coffee industry burnout (I’m one of those folks who volunteers for just about everything) and, in one afternoon of seeing people do what they do so well, I feel completely rejuvenated. I really thank all of the competitors and the final 6 in particular.

What was exceptionally cool was seeing Chris Baca awarded the nicest barista award (or something like that) before the winners were announced. This is an award given by the other competitors who honor their favorite co-competitor, who shows the best attitude and support. Chris gets this award and then was announced as the champion. I haven’t had the pleasure of getting to know him even though he’s at my local coffee shop, but it’s really great to know that the best barista of the day was also loved by his fellow competitors.

Check out the WRBC website for more information and updates: www.WRBC2008.com.
